A ZANY team of fancy-dress fund-raisers are putting the fun into funeral cars by driving one from Blackpool to Benidorm.

The gang from Green solicitors, Whalley, are entering the 1,500-mile “Benidorm or Bust” charity rally in a fourth-hand 1989 Volvo limousine that cost them £500.

They’ve named the banger “Yes, it’s long.”

Ian said: “When I was given the chance to enter a car in the rally I couldn’t refuse. We are sharing the costs of the trip with Acorn Digital Inks, of Accrington, and all the sponsorship money raised is going to the North West Air Ambulance.

“I broke my leg in a motorcycle accident last year and the air ambulance was a welcome sight – although in the event it left me and went to someone worse off!”

Nearly 40 teams in an assortment of bangers are taking part in the four-day rally, which starts on March 20th.

It takes a route from Blackpool to Dover, then Calais down through France passing over the Millau Viaduct – the highest road bridge in the world and seen recently on Top Gear – then down to Marseille, Barcelona, Lloret de Mar and on to Benidorm.

Ian says the team’s 1989 Volvo limousine was cheap enough to buy at £500, although there is not much chance of them finishing first. “It has three former owners all of whom were undertakers and it has never been over 40mph,” he said.

“We are very grateful to those who have helped with the car. James Alpe has supplied the graphics, Bee Mill garage in Ribchester the MOT and necessary work and Rossendale Tyre and Exhaust has helped with tyre services.

“The air ambulance is a really great cause. It can help anyone any time and when you least expect it. Every penny raised goes to keeping it in the air and it really is a life saver. We will be asking people to sponsor us and be collecting money on the ferry.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation, however small, can deliver it or post a cheque payable to the “North West Air Ambulance” to Green Solicitors, 79 King Street, Whalley.
