The Outside Track

MELLOR Brook Community Centre will be alive to the energetic tunes, songs and dancing of The Outside Track, with special guest Tom Doughty, on Saturday February 11th.

Mellor Brook regulars will remember the visit in December 2009 of Edinburgh harpist Ailie Robertson. Two years on from her impressive performance of material from her debut solo album, “First Things First”, she returns with her regular band, The Outside Track. Hailing variously from Scotland, Ireland, Cape Breton and Vancouver, its five members craft new and exciting variations of traditional songs and tunes as well as composing original repertoire – still in a traditional idiom, but with a vibrant and modern feel.

The full line-up comprises Ailie Robertson onharp, Cillian O’Dalaigh on guitar, Fiona Black on piano accordion, Norah Rendell on lead vocals and flute, and Mairi Rankin on fiddle and vocals.

Asn well as providing a feast for the ears, two members of the band give fine displays of step dancing – Irish style from Cillian Ó’Dálaigh and Cape Breton style from Nova Scotia-born Mairi Rankin.

Special guest is Cheshire musician Tom Doughty, returning to Mellor Brook following his outstanding performance supporting Coope, Boyes & Simpson in November 2010. His unique lap slide guitar style incorporates blues, jazz, folk, Indian ragas and lots of improvisation.

Tom had to adapt to a lap style of guitar playing after an accident on his motorcycle. It left him wheelchair-bound and restricted the use of his fingers. He learnt to play a new style utilising a bottleneck slide technique – he already had a great singing voice. Tom has released three albums, the most recent of which is “Have a Taste of This”. Hear some of it here.

Tickets for the Mellor Brook show are great value at £10 – visit www.mellorbrook.org or phone Janet Aspin on 07791 558554.
