Clitheroe hosts weekend of food and fun

A BUMPER weekend of fantastic events awaits food-lovers and fun-seekers in Clitheroe.

Saturday will see the launch of the town's Fine Food and Crafts Street Market from 9 a.m. and the event promises something for everyone.

Castle Street will be closed to traffic for a traditional market scene, with more than 40 artisan and local food producers, top venues and food and crafts heroes joining in the food festivities.

Organised by Clitheroe Chamber of Trade and Commerce, in association with Ribble Valley Borough Council, the one-day event will be opened by celebrity chef and co-owner of Northcote Manor Nigel Haworth, who will launch the celebrations from 12-30 p.m. outside The Rose and Crown Hotel, in Castle Street.

The Rose and Crown will also host a Mad Hatters Fancy Dress Competition from 2 p.m. with prizes and goodies. All ages are welcome to take part.

Local artist Kirsty Young has been painting and creating realistic life size figures and backdrops for the party and also situated in the pub will be the Lancashire Travelwise Cycling Road Show featuring a cycle-powered smoothie maker in which visitors can pedal their own fruit smoothies for free!

Some of the other highlights on Saturday are:

A musical extravaganza at Key Street bar with its exclusive Clitheroe premiere of the Jack Daniels Harley Davidson road show – bringing a unique bespoke Jack Daniels Harley Davidson motorbike complete with promotional girls and a Jack Daniels barbecue.

Visitors to the street market will be treated to an exclusive live and al fresco performance by Clitheroe Pop Choir who will be appearing from 2 p.m. and performing pop classics in their distinctive style.

Also performing on the day will be world champion accordion duo "The Petulengros Sisters", adding an authentic feelgood factor and swinging street market vibe.

Local opera duo Trovatori will perform a variety of music throughout the afternoon.

Giant characters, stilt walkers, big bird comedy street performers, furry fun mascots and balloon artistes will entertain visitors along Castle Street.

From 1 p.m. chef Nigel Haworth will be making a trip to Clitheroe Market where he will give a talk and perform a demonstration on "Seasonality" using the very best seasonal produce on sale there. He will then visit The Grand for a mini demonstration as part of The Grand's "Theatre of Food".

There will be a selection of local producers popping in over the day to give talks and mini demonstrations. A cupcake workshop will also be hosted by Taste at The Grand. Local entrepreneur Tim Ankers, from BBC's Junior Apprentice TV show, will also drop in.

Many shops and their owners will be wearing fancy dress and theming their shops with special promotions, such as Clitheroe Travel, who have a fun fortune cookie China travel promotion and Panda mascots all day.
