Chatburn’s big Queen’s Diamond Jubilee plans

THE organisation of events to celebrate The Queens Diamond Jubilee is well under way in Chatburn.
This is set to be one of the largest celebrations in the area, with 14 events in six locations over three days. There are events for all ages in the community, including music, sports, dance, a huge village picnic, open air religious service, sheep dog demonstration, bouncy castle, stalls and songs of praise, photo competition, entertainers and barbecue.
A key event open throughout the weekend from June 2nd-4th is an exhibition of life over the past 60 years in Chatburn and the world. Many events have taken place in Chatburn during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, including the playing fields, mill, railway station, school, bypass, Methodist church and the social structure.
The organisers are in need of items or information to display at the exhibition, and would be very grateful for any contribution. These could be photographs, newspaper articles, letters or any mementos or items. Wherever possible, any item for display will be copied in order to preserve the original.
The exhibition is being put together by Roy Porter and Neil Turpin. Roy can be contacted on 01200 441392 or at Roy Porter Butchers in Chatburn. Roy and Neil will be pleased to hear from anyone who can contribute to this important event.
Commenting on the overall organisation of the event, Clive Greenwood, chairman of the Diamond Jubilee organising committee, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the enthusiastic response from the community at the recent village meeting and thrilled with the strong community support there has been in putting things together, both for this major event in June, and fund-raising events in the months leading up to it.
“These additional fund-raising events are being organised by the community as a result of that meeting and include a Ceilidh Dance, Jumble Sale, Treasure Hunt and Auction of Promise. The next event is the Ceilidh Dance at Chatburn School on March 17th, with leading musicians and caller from the region, The Millstone Band.
“All proceeds after expenses will be donated to North West Air Ambulance, so we welcome people to come along to have some fun knowing that their money is going to a worthy cause.
“I would also take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the 18 businesses and organisations who have made financial donations, without which these events could not have taken place. Full details will be in a free 20-page brochure available soon.”
