Burns Night celebrated in style in Whalley: PHOTO SPECIAL
Regulars at the Dog Inn, Whalley, enjoyed the delights of real bagpipers as they celebrated Burns’ Night in style.
Members of the Accrington Pipe Band played traditional Scottish airs, reels and marches as guests at the Whalley pub dined on haggis, tatties and neeps, accompanied by !a wee dram”.
During the night many tartan-clad guests took part in the now annual procession to the resting place of Fanny Sparks in the graveyard of Whalley Parish Church to lay a wreath.
The grave of Fanny and her sister was adopted some years ago by the village pub and the wreath-laying ceremony has become an integral part of its Burns’ Night event.
The regulars also paid their respects to a Whalley resident, Danny Flynn, who died recently aged 75.
Pub landlord Mr Norman Atty said: “It was a wonderful evening and I would like to say a really big thank you to businesses in Whalley and Clitheroe for supporting the event.
The evening was also supported by members of the Accrington Rotary Club.”
The successful event also saw the presentation of a cheque of £1,876 to local woman, Andrea Holgate, whose daughter Sophie suffers from Cystic Fibrosis.
The money was raised by a raffle organised by Norman’s wife, Christine, and family friend Mags.
In addition to the raffle, other fund-raising events were held in order to raise the amount to be donated towards the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.Details of the winning tickets can be found by logging onto www.dog-innwhalley.co.uk
