POEM: Hunters take care!

WHEN walking in the woods one day

There a carcass of a dog did lay

Did the hunter and his gun

Intend it to be this way?

Or did a frightened hare jump up,

Giving out its panicked shrill

And by mistaken chance

His own dog did shoot and kill.

No matter now, the deed be done

Until another ill-fated day

Where is now but a dog

Perhaps a child will lay.

The dog to me did not speak

How could it? Let’s be fair

But to the hunter he surely said:

“Please, please, do take bloody care!”
