LETTER: Old lady has already been killed at Chatburn danger junction

THERE is a notice by the Post Office in the centre of Chatburn: “Who will be the first to die on this suicidal junction?

The comment is out of date. It should read who will be the NEXT to die on this suicidal junction?

Coun. Howard Douglas recalls the agony he suffered attending a dying old lady after she had been knocked down by a car.

I do not favour traffic lights or a zebra crossing, which can bring traffic screaming to a halt, or can be abused by errant passers-by.

Immediately a mini-roundabout at the junction with Ribble Lane would slow down traffic coming from either direction on the main road and would allow right of access to the main road for traffic approaching from Ribble Lane.

Robin This notice refers to the junction of Old Road and Ribble lane in Chatburn. RVBC and LCC are proposing to change the STOP line at the bottom of Old Road, so it sticks out into Ribble Lane, making the road narrower and a very busy junction even more dangerous. Tomorrow , Tuesday 31st Jan a number of local residents are holding a protest between 8:00am - 9:00am to make drivers aware, you will be very welcome. RVBC did not even consult the Parish Council never mind the residents and we are all very angry! This is to meet the access needs of yet another greedy developer who wants to build 10 houses on the land at the top of Old Road, on the Green Belt, outside the village boundary and RIGHT next to the edge of the Hanson's Cement Quarry. Seven of these houses are 4 bedroom luxury detached houses and the rest are 3 bedroom social houses. No one wants this development, except perhaps the developer and the Officers at RVBC Planning dept, who have moved heaven and earth to push the development through. Resident held a meeting and 67 people turned up to oppose the development. representations have been made to Nigel Evans MP who wrote to RVBC, LCC, and the Highways Dept. to not avail. We also contacted LCC Councillor Albert Atkinson who also tried to find out why RVBC is ignoring residents, and seem to be twisting policy to ram this development through. It may be 10 houses now, but the land was deemed suitable for 83 homes in the SHLAA report, so we could see further applications for 30, 60 or more once outline planning for access is granted.
