LETTER: Burnley Mechanics needs should not charge more

FOLLOWING Peter Pike’s letter in the Express, I would also like to say how much me and my son enjoyed the pantomime “Dick Whittington” by Burnley Pantomime Society. It was the first time we had seen one and we will certainly be returning again to watch them next year.

The only comment I would like to make is regarding the Mechanics. I went on the Mechanics’ website to check if there were any tickets left for the Sunday, January 15th, performances and the website stated “call”. No-one answered the telephone despite numerous calls, and its brochure saying “on Sundays the box office will be open one hour prior to performance on event days only”. It was a very frosty morning and I did not want to defrost the car and drive on icy roads to the Mechanics only to be told all the tickets had been sold.

On the Monday I called into the Box Office and bought tickets for the weekend after (the last and only performance, on Sunday 22nd) and the only tickets left were on the back row.

Mr Pike mentioned in his letter “the Mechanics is a great asset to this town and we must use it and support the productions there to ensure it has a long future in Burnley”, but surely they should now stop the booking fee of £2 per ticket on all online bookings and £1 per ticket for all card transactions and they would receive more support. I have booked three events for this year and these extra charges add up.
