Wartime fund-raiser in Colne will aid Help For Heroes

Wartime spirit is coming back to Colne in the form of a 1940s charity fund-raising event for Help For Heroes on Saturday, September 24th.

Established in 1946 to serve families whose homes had been destroyed by war, Colne-based Boundary Bathrooms is celebrating 65 years in business by hosting a blitz-style bash in aid of Help For Heroes.

Visitors will be treated to demonstrations of The Lindyhop, a popular American dance from the 1920s-1940’s swing era, and asked to take the floor for a lesson from professional dancers and 1940s enthusiasts, Pure Lindy.

The event will also feature a vintage clothing sale where visitors can buy fashions and designer frocks from yesteryear, donated by top vintage clothing boutiques including: Vinchi, Rag and Magpie, Very Vintage Clothing, Rokit, and Pretty in Vintage.

To recreate the traditional tea-dance experience, visitors are invited to join the Boundary team in dressing in traditional 1940s-style clothing with a prize awarded for the most glamorous wartime Boundary Belle or Boundary Boy.

The fund-raising event will culminate in a raffle to win a £500 bathroom makeover with the winner picking bathroom or kitchen products from a range of 100,000 items, including bathroom furniture, cabinets and bathroom TVs.

Refreshments and children’s face painting will be available throughout the day. Entrance to the event will be free, but visitors will be invited to make a donation to Help For Heroes, which supports servicemen/women wounded in service. All proceeds from the event and vintage clothing sale will go to the charity

Neil Dent, chief executive, explains: “It’s not every day you turn 65 so we wanted to mark the occasion by bringing the past back to life.

“We’re hoping to recreate a traditional 1940s tea-dance with war-time dancing and music - but with a few more ‘creature comforts’ than would have been available ‘back in the day’ – and to raise money for an incredibly worthy cause.

“The war years were marked by an unbelievable spirit of community. We want to encourage the people of Lancashire to come together and ‘do their bit’ while having fun to support members of the Armed Forces who have been wounded in the service of their country.”

Public donations of good quality and designer vintage clothing and accessories are welcomed and should be delivered to the Boundary Bathrooms showroom in Regent Street, Colne, Lancs, BB8 8LD before the event.
