Clitheroe-based specialist chemicals manufacturer Johnson Matthey is teaming up with local schools and business education partners to bring classroom science to life for the pupils.

Keen to make a difference within the community, the company looked into partnering with one primary and one secondary school in the area, with St Augustine’s RC High School in Billington and Pendle CP Primary School in Clitheroe eventually being chosen.

Clare Holden of Johnson Matthey said: “We hope to work with these schools for several years to really try and make a difference within the resources and funding available. The schools were selected because of their enthusiasm to embrace science in the classroom.”

The help of several science and business education partners has been enlisted, including STEMfirst, Young Enterprise, and The Association for Science Education.

At Pendle, work is underway to develop a fun and hands-on programme of events for Science Week in March 2012 and both schools are working with Young Enterprise, who aim to inspire and equip young people to learn and succeed through enterprise. Pendle will take part in a “Money Matters” day, a workshop which will help them understand finance in the world around them and St Augustine’s will take part in the Young Enterprise Company Programme Scheme, where pupils set up their own company to sell either a product or service.

Clare continued: “Supporting science education and business among young people has always been at the heart Johnson Matthey’s aspirations for working within the community. With these new activities in place, the company is upping its involvement with Clitheroe youngsters. Through a combination of financial support and employees’ time, we hope that we as a company can convey the excitement of science and business to children in the local community.”
