FORMER Clitheroe police sergeant Mr Jim Crabtree has died in hospital at Blackburn aged 96.

Born in Bolton, Mr Crabtree came to Clitheroe aged 20 and was stationed in the town for 30 years until his retirement, gaining a reputation as an old-style sergeant to be respected. He turned down chances of promotion to stay in Clitheroe.

After he retired, he went to work for Steele’s solicitors as a legal executive in matrimonial cases.

Mr Crabtree, of Princess Avenue, Clitheroe, was a Freemason in Waddington 401 Lodge, with whom he was the worshipful master, and he was recently presented with a 70-year service certificate. He was also worshipful master with long service at Keep Mark Lodge of Clitheroe and was a chapter member of other lodges.

He wife, Mabel (nee Pye), a member of a Clitheroe printing family, died about eight years ago, and Mr Crabtree is survived by his daughter Mrs Patricia Wood, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
