Clitheroe Poppy Appeal organiser to step down

CLITHEROE’S Poppy Appeal organiser is standing down after 26 years, with a plea to the public and helpers to make this year’s Poppy Day the best yet.

Mr Robert Scott first became involved in the Royal British Legion’s annual appeal in 1984 shortly after leaving the RAF, where he was an aircraft technician, and he became organiser in 1986.

Now because of increased work commitments at Johnson Matthey, he will step aside after this year’s appeal is over.

But first, he appealed for someone to take up the reins, and for more volunteers to help with street collections.

“I’ve found it increasingly difficult to fit in Poppy Appeal work with my full-time job,” said Mr Scott, of Newton Street, Clitheroe.

“It would be much less arduous for an active retired person with good organisational skills. I will coach them into the job and help them.”

Mr Scott thanked volunteers past and present for their efforts, which last year raised a record £14,217.

“Because there is an ever-increasing demand on the Royal British Legion’s services, we hope to raise a similar amount, and more if we can,” he said.

The appeal is run by a small group of volunteers, and the organiser’s job involves co-ordinating their efforts, recruiting new helpers and handling the administration.

The street collection will be on Saturday November 10th, and anyone over 16 can help.

Would-be volunteers can report to the British Legion Club, Whalley Road, from 10 a.m. on collection day, or preferably contact Mr Scott beforehand on 01200 424055 or 07951 732144, or email robert.scott@hotmail.com

All organisations who normally receive a poppy wreath or have ordered one for this year can collect it from the British Legion Club after 5 p.m. from Monday November 5th, or from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday November 10th.
