Clitheroe fire-fighters tackle fierce house fire blaze
A 10-STRONG contingency of fire engines, including two from Clitheroe, fought a fierce house fire blaze on the edge of the Ribble Valley throughout the night.
The blaze started at a detached house in Wigglesworth at around 8 p.m. last night (Thursday) with fire-fighters from Settle and Skipton initially responding.
Crews from Clitheroe, Earby, Barnoldswick, Bentham and Grassington were subsequently called out, plus additional fire-fighters from Skipton and crews from as far away as Harrogate and Tadcaster.
Fire-fighters fought the blaze for four and a half hours, pumping water from a nearby stream, to bring the fire under control. Crews from North Yorkshire Fire Service were still damping down at the site this morning (Friday).
Early reports indicated a fire in the loft space of the house which had soon completely gutted the roof. The owners managed to escape from the house safely and the only casualty was a fire-fighter from Yorkshire who was taken to Airedale Hospital at Steeton near Skipton after injuring himself during the operation.
Dave McGrath, watch manager at Clitheroe Fire Station, said North Yorkshire Fire Service was still in the early stages of its investigations.
