CLITHEROE canoeists were in top form at the annual British Canoe Unions North West Region Weekend at the Teesside Whitewater course, near Stockton On Tees.
The event, hosted by Clitheroe Canoe Club, saw approximately 100 paddlers from Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumbria and Yorkshire take part over two days.
Saturday was competition day, with five disciplines downriver race, canoe polo, flatwater sprint, slalom, and freestyle with prizes for the top three in each.
Twelve-year-old Tom Turner, from Clitheroe, had an outstanding day, with first place in four out of the five disciplines, also winning first prize overall in his Under 13 age group.
Felicity Downing, 12, and 13-year-old Chris Kemp, also from Clitheroe, took second and third place respectively.
Other individual performances from Clitheroe paddlers included first and second places for Jonny Noblett (Under 16), John Turner (veteran) and Andy Noblett (veteran), but perhaps the most outstanding achievement was by 16-year-old Robert Anderson, who took third place overall in the mens division.
On Sunday, the paddlers returned to play on the man-made whitewater course, and to develop their river skills.
Coaching sessions were delivered to paddlers who wanted to develop their white water skills further, while on the flat water, paddlers were given the opportunity to have their skills assessed using the BCUs star test award.
Clitheroe Canoe Club chairman, Jonathan Downing, said: Its been a great weekend. The feedback has been very positive, with many asking for the date of next years event!
It was good to see so many paddlers from across the region making the effort to travel to the North East, and it was particularly satisfying to see a good number of juniors taking part.
Clitheroe Canoe Club, based at its purpose-built facility in Chatburn, is a family-oriented club which offers opportunities in recreational and competitive canoeing and kayaking.

Anyone interested in trying canoeing can contact Downing on 01200 423962.

On May 29th, the club will be holding an open day at Chatburn Water, where everyone will be made welcome. Admission will be free and visitors will be encouraged to have a paddle in one of the clubs kayaks. The event starts at noon.
