Wembley hero is pride of school
WEMBLEY hero Tony Keefe is the pride of Bowland High School.
The Grindleton school's Head of PE helped Kirkham and Wesham complete a famous double at the home of English football on Sunday.
The left back, who has taught at Bowland for seven years, started for the Fylde club as they won the FA Vase in dramatic fashion, to add to their promotion success in the league.
In their first season in the Vodkat League, after years of dominating the West Lancashire League, Kirkham were promoted to the First Division as runners-up to New Mills.
But the icing on the cake was Vase glory, after former Blackburn Rovers academy striker Matt Walwyn came off the bench to score twice in the last six minutes to see off Lowestoft Town.
Former Darwen defender Keefe, nicknamed "Cheggers" at the club, was replaced 10 minutes after half-time by Ritchie Allen as Kirkham looked to claw back a one-goal deficit, after Phil Thompson headed through his own goal after 10 minutes.
And Walwyn's dramatic late brace ensured the teacher came away with a winner's medal.
Champagne celebrations followed in front of a crowd of almost 20,000 – with Kirkham's near-4,000 following dwarved by Lowestoft – before a triumphant open top bus tour through Kirkham on Monday night.
Thousands of fans crammed into the streets of Kirkham to hail their heroes, with the pavements and pubs decked out in the team's blue and white.
Next season, the club will be renamed AFC Fylde, as their ambitions of achieving Football League status by 2022 kick-on, but Keefe and his team-mates certainly put Kirkham on the map.
