BROTHERS Jonnie and Robbie Schofield have both been selected to represent Great Britain – at different sports.

Jonnie has been selected for the GB Senior Canoe Sprint Team in Men's Kayak doubles, while Robbie ran for the GB Junior Team at the McCain Loughborough International on Sunday, in the 800m.

At the Nottingham regatta selection event last weekend, Jonnie and Ben Brown, Senior World and European finalists, won the 500m comfortably, 3.5 seconds ahead of the new crew of Ed Cox and Ed Rutherford.

The 1,000m race was much closer, but they regained the lead in the last 10 metres, and took the line 0.05 seconds ahead of Cox and Rutherford.
They will be competing at Poznan, Poland in the second of the three World Cup regattas this weekend.

This will lead up to the European Championships at Brandenburg in Germany in June, and the World Championships at Dartmouth, Canada in August.

His brother, Robbie was also been selected for the first time by UK Athletics for the Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland junior team for the McCain Loughborough International, after his excellent time at Millfield in early May, which put him top of the UK Under 20 rankings.

Robbie, current Lancashire men's 800m &and 1,500m champion, raced against Loughborough Students, GB Students, England, Scotland, and Wales in the match, which forms part of the team's preparation for next month's Mannheim international and the European Junior Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia in July.

The Sawley runner, currently studying for his A levels at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, did well, coming fourth overall in a personal best time of 1 minute 50.57 seconds, behind two invited athletes, Damien Moss and Ed Aston, and just beaten into fourth place by the senior Scottish athlete Graeme Oudney.

Having become Lancashire County champion last weekend, completing the middle distance double at Stanley Park, Robbie's Ribble Valley AC team-mates also impressed, earning a total haul of nine gold, two silver and five bronze medals.

To add to Robbie's two gold medals, Sam Yates won the Under 17 400m, and there were victories for Ian Yates in the Junior men's 400m, Leigh Lennon in the Junior women's 1,500m and 800m, Nathan Riding in the Senior men's 1,500m and 3,000m steeplechase and Ashleigh Williams in the Senior women's 400m.

Silver medals were awarded to Ian Yates in the Junior men's 200m, and Luke Watson in the Junior men's 2,000m steeplechase.

Bronze medals went to Helen Conlon in the Under 17 300m, Kristie Leybourne in the Junior women's 1,500m, Abbie Thistlethwaite in the Under 17 800m, Sam Yates in the Under 17 800m and Ashleigh Williams in the Junior women's 200m.

Also competing were Kristie Leybourne (4th Under 20 800m), Helen Conlon (4th Under 17 200m), Tess Parkinson (8th Under 17 800m and 1,500m), Joe Parker (5th Under 20 200m and 6th 100m), Luke Watson (5th Under 20 1,500m), Lucy Lennon (7th Under 13 800m and 6th 1,500m), Reece Clark (Under 15 800m and 6th 1,500m), Alex Thistlethwaite (8th Under 15 800m and 6th 75m hurdles), Abbie Thistlethwaite (5th Under 17 1,500m) and Jayne Ashe (10th Under 17 1,500m).

Ribble Valley's next major event is the Lancashire Schools' Championships.
