WINNING Loughborough University's Superstars event once was a superb achievement, but Clitheroe's Anna Griffiths has just completed an incredible hat-trick!

The all-round athlete claimed her first title in 2007, and she has gone on to dominate the event, which is organised by the Athletic Union and based on the BBC programme of the same name, where athletes compete in a wide range of sports.

One of the toughest competitors at the university, renowned for it's sporting prowess, Griffiths came through the preliminary round in first place, ahead of 19 other girls who progressed, after mastering an assault course.

The first full day of action involved a football penalty shootout and basketball throws, where a solid performance put Griffiths in contention.

She backed that up on day two with wins in the 100m, javelin - achieved in a personal best of 29.60m - and 800m, while finishing second in the long jump.

On day three, Griffiths was third in the 50m swim, and second in the water polo shootout, ensuring she qualified in first place for the final, where the top four girls came together.

And at midnight in front of friends in the Hey Ewe bar came the gym test.

Griffiths achieved 80 press ups in a minute, before incredibly managing more than 90 squat thrusts in 60 seconds to clinch the crown for the third successive year. She was presented with a trophy and a cheque by Gladiators referee John Anderson, while her club, the university's women's hockey, benefited to the tune of £200.

Griffiths also earned free membership for the gym on campus.

She has also been collecting silverware on the hockey pitch, having been named most improved player for the Loughborough Students first team, voted for by the players - a year after winning the same award for the third team.
