A PENSIONER is being treated in hospital for burns after a blaze at his home in Clitheroe during the early hours of Wednesday.
The fire, which started in the ground floor of the house in Curzon Street at around 4 a.m., was so severe police officers had to evacuate six neighbouring households due to the threat of smoke inhalation.
The 69-year-old man, who is the sole occupant of the house, woke up to discover the fire in the back downstairs room of his terraced house.
He managed to escape the property and raise the alarm, but suffered burns to his head, upper body and arms as well as smoke inhalation in the process.
It took fire-fighters three hours to contain the blaze and make sure there was no prospect of it reigniting. The fire severely damaged the downstairs rooms of the property.
Clitheroe watch manager Dave McGrath said investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, but articles being stored too close to a gas fire could have been a factor.
Mr McGrath reminded people about the importance of fitting smoke alarms and checking they work. For a free fire safety check and to get alarms fitted call 0800 1691125.
