THIS is the terrifying moment a runaway pickup truck and trailer crashed through the shop window of Harry Garlick on a busy Clitheroe market day.

There was chaos in the town this morning (Thursday) after the vehicle jackknifed and smashed into the shop in King Street.

Luckily, no-one was injured in the accident, which could have been far worse.

The incident, which happened at about 11 a.m., left shoppers and staff at Harry Garlick's electrical shop stunned. The shop only recently had its large display window replaced after it was smashed by a vandal.

It is understood that a remote-controlled platform lift was being loaded on to the trailer when the pickup began to roll down the street.
The hydraulic platform had been used the previous day by a signwriter repainting the shop sign above Byrnes wines and spirits shop, further up the steeply sloping King Street.

It toppled from the trailer onto the pavement as the runaway pickup rammed into Garlick's shopfront, smashing the window.

Officers from Clitheroe Police were the first to arrive on the scene as a police van happened to be travelling up King Street at the time of the incident.
