AGE is no barrier to local lady Edna Cowperthwaite, who recently celebrated her 89th birthday and is still working!
Since retiring in 1969, Edna has been a regular and committed volunteer at Clitheroe's Oxfam shop.
"We are very lucky to have Edna with us," said Lisa Barker, Oxfam shop manager.
"She is such a positive person, popular with our customers and a great source of local knowledge and history. I often wonder if she is Clitheroe's most experienced and vital volunteer."
Every Friday Edna can be found in the shop arranging clothing, chatting to customers, working behind the till, doing odd jobs and generally making herself useful.
"Edna is living proof that being involved with your local community really keeps body and soul together," added Lisa.
Edna even prefers to work on the shop's first floor, so she can have a regular workout climbing the stairs!
She has seen many changes in Clitheroe during her lifetime and commented: "Sometimes when the shop is quiet, I look down on to the street below and think about the different shops which used to occupy the buildings opposite. I like telling my friends at Oxfam what I remember."
This year marks the 60th anniversary of Oxfam's first shop opening in Oxford, and with it the first opportunity to be an Oxfam shop volunteer.
While Edna stands out as one of the charity's most dedicated volunteers, she is just one of thousands who have helped to sell a vast range of donated items to raise money to help others escape poverty and suffering.
Currently Clitheroe's Oxfam shop is appealing for donations of quality clothing, records, CDs and DVDs which it can sell to raise money for its "For All" campaign, which aims to provide free access to education and healthcare services for millions more poor people.
