The Clarets seemingly faced an impossible task to overturn a 4-1 deficit from the first leg at White Hart Lane.

But they pushed their illustrious hosts all the way, and can take massive credit for their performance, to a man.

Robbie Blake's free kick put Burnley ahead at the break, and when Chris McCann tapped in a second following more good work from Blake, the tie wasd back in the balance.

Substitute Jay Rodriguez continued his knack of scoring crucial late goals with the equaliser on aggregate two minutes from time, and as things stood, Burnley would win on away goals come the end of extra-time.

But Pavlyuchenko, who maintained his run of scoring in every game in the competition, and Defoe, broke Burnley hearts with their late goals.

CLOCKWATCH

4 mins: Chris Eagles cross is blocked but falls invitingly for Martin Paterson, but Ben Alnwick is out to smother the danger.

6 mins: Burnley almost have their early goal in bizarre fashion, as Benoit Assou-Ekotto overplays a backpass to Ben Alnwick, and as the ball looks certain to loop over the Spurs keeper and head into the net, Alnwick produces a fine save to turn the ball wide for a corner, which comes to nothing.

8 mins: Jermaine Defoe's shot is pushed wide by Brian Jensen, and the resulting corner from David Bentley is headed over by Jonathan Woodgate.

15 mins: After a fast tempo start, the game has become somewhat subdued as Burnley chase that elusive breakthrough.

17 mins: Robbie Blake finds Martin Paterson with a defence-splitting pass, but the striker is unable to control the ball and the chance is gone.

19 mins: David Bentley backheels the ball to Chris Gunter on the right, but his cross is headed wide by Luka Modric.

20 mins: Burnley change tactics, switching Chris Eagles and Robbie Blake on either side of their midfield in the hope of a breakthrough. And within a minute, David Bentley is booked for a scything challenge on Eagles.

22 mins: Chris McCann tries his luck from distance, but the ball flies harmlessly wide of Ben Alnwick's left hand post.

24 mins: Martin Paterson wins the Clarets a corner on the right, but when the ball reaches Wade Elliott on the edge of the box, he tries a cut curling shot but gets it horribly wrong as his shot goes over the target.

31 mins: Chris Eagles' speculative effort deflects for a corner, but Robbie Blake's flag kick is headed over by Michael Duff on the stretch.

34 mins: GOAL!! That's the goal Burnley craved! This semi final is back in the balance as Martin Paterson is fouled by Jonathan Woodgate on the edge of the area, and Robbie Blake repeats his trick at Preston by curling his effort into the corner. Burnley 1, Tottenham 0 (2-4 on agg).

39 mins: Burnley are forced into a defensive change as Stephen Jordan hobbles off, to be replaced by Norwegian Christian Kalvenes.

43 mins: Jonothan Woodgate heads David Bentley's free kick straight at Brian Jensen.

62 mins: Tottenham make their first change of the night as Jamie O'Hara is replaced by Gareth Bale.

67 mins: Clarke Carlisle's miscalculation lets in Jermaine Defoe, but Brian Jensen comes to the aid of his defender by smothering the Tottenham striker as he looks to get the ball control.

69 mins: Michael Duff is booked for a foul on Roman Pavlyuchenko, but Tottenham's attempts to take the free kick early comes back to haunt them as the chance is wasted.

73 mins: GOAL!! The comeback is definately on now! Robbie Blake is again at the heart of it, turning Chris Gunter inside out before crossing for Chris McCann to turn the ball home from close range at the far post. Burnley 2, Tottenham 0 (3-4 on agg).

78 mins: Gareth Bale is found in acres of apce on the right, and when his cross is missed by Michael Duff, Roman Pavlyuchenko seemingly has to score but slices wide of the target.

81 mins: Burnley's next throw of the dice is to introduce Jay Rodriguez for Joey Gudjonsson. Can he be the hero?

84 mins: Gareth Bale's stinging shot is only parried by Brian Jensen, but he makes up fir it by smothering Jermaine Defoe's follow-up.

88 mins: GOOOOOOOOOOAL!! What did I say seven minutes ago???? Robbie Blake's free kick is fumbled by Ben Alnwick, and Jay Rodriguez is on hand to turn in the loose ball. Burnley 3, Tottenham 0 (4-4 on agg).

116 mins: Robbie Blake has been everywhere tonight, shown by making a crucial interception in his own area to cut out Gareth Bale's drilled cross.

119 mins: GOAL!! Oh no. Roman Pavlyuchenko breaks Burnley hearts as he fires in a near post shot following good work from Gareh Bale. Burney 3, Tottenham 1 (4-5 on agg).

120 mins: GOAL!! One of the most heart-warming things I've ever seen. Jermaine Defoe fires in a very harsh second on the night for Tottenham, which is greeted by a massive standing ovation by the Burnley fans.
