BURNLEY suffered their first defeat at Turf Moor in 34 weeks at weekend and surrendered their impressive 100% home record in the process.
Roberto Martinez returned to Turf Moor to haunt his opposite number yet again after he left East Lancashire with a 2-0 victory as Swansea manager last season.

This time he brought his new Wigan side to Turf Moor and ensured that the Clarets' baron history against the Greater Manchester outfit continued with a 3-1 win.

Burnley, who have only beaten Wigan twice since the Latics' entry into the Football League in 1978, started brightly and for the second successive game took the lead in the fourth minute.

A quick throw-in from Wade Elliott saw Robbie Blake, who opened the scoring against Rovers last week, jinx around Wigan captain Mario Melchiot before whipping in a clever cross which found Steven Fletcher with precision at the back post who duely obliged with his fifth goal of the season in all competitions.

But, similarly to last Sunday's game at Ewood Park, the Clarets fell apart and gifted Wigan an equaliser just seven minutes later with one of the most bizarre goals ever to grace Turf Moor.

Melchiot evaded the attentions of Andre Bikey on the right-hand touchline before firing a mis-placed pass across the pitch. There seemed little trouble as Jensen went to claim the ball, but, as he did so, the Dane fell to the floor clutching his ankle as Hugo Rodallega tapped into an empty net. Jensen was then replaced by Peruvian Diego Penny.

Burnley weren't without their chances of taking the lead but pressurised without any real penetration. The most notable effort came courtesy of Chris Eagles who was handed his first Premier League start of the campaign as he burst into the Wigan 18-yard box early in the second half but he was denied by Chris Kirkland.

And the Latics found themselves 2-1 up with their next attack as substitute Jordi Gomez slotted a ball into the path of Jason Scotland who played the ball back for Rodallega who grabbed his brace with a crisp strike that thumped in off the inside of Penny's far post.

The Clarets pressed and seemed to be re-vitalised following the introduction of David Nugent. However, they were paid to pay for not being clinical in front of goal and in the 76th minute Emerson Boyce effectively won the game when he swooped around Bikey from a Paul Scharner corner to tap in frfom close range.

Clarke Carlisle hit the crossbar late on for the Clarets but it wasn't enough. Owen Coyle will be hoping his side bounce back when they face a crunch game against Hull City at Turf Moor on Saturday.
